Playing freely provides movement within a child's body that is vital
to each child's physical development. During free play, children
develop critical gross and fine motor skills. Free play helps to
individually improve each child's agility, balance, flexibility and
overall strength. Through play, children develop language and
reasoning skills, exercise symbolic thought, begin problem solving and
improve their ability to focus and control behavior. Because play
provides beneficial input for the child's brain, it helps lead to
discovery, verbal judgment and reasoning as well as the development of
manipulative skills, creativity and thought processes. Children
learn about consequence and risk through free play, which helps them
in their decision-making as they grow up.
Choosing the right playground equipment for your preschool or
childcare center is essential.
You must select age-appropriate units, and may be required to have
multiple 'play areas' based on age. The space you have available
(known as 'Use Zone') will determine, to some degree, the shape and
size of the unit. You must also consider that you will be
required to have a 'fall zone' parameter around the unit for safety.
Each unit also has a 'Capacity' limit. See our diagram below:
Note: the two arrows measure the
'Use Zone' mentioned above.
